Building a Home- Phase 2

Howdy ya’ll!  Hope you’re enjoying your summer.  I’m in South Africa right now enjoying a second winter and avoiding the Texas summer heat while studying abroad for grad school.  I thought I’d check in with you guys and give you an update on our home.  So much has been accomplished while I’ve been away all summer.

While Danny and I were in Europe, we had a few family members stop by the lot and snap a few pictures for us.  Sadly, we missed pics of just the foundation and framing… things just progressed so quickly! Oh well. Now that Danny’s back, he has the very important job of taking pictures of the house for me once a week so a) I can see the progress and b) so we don’t miss a thing throughout the process of our first home being built.  :)

In case you missed the first post, you can find it here.  We broke ground on May 19th and then had a full week of rain the following week.  So everything got pushed into the first week of June which is when Danny and I left for our trip to Europe.  Since then, the following has been completed on the house:

  • plumbing rough installed
  • foundation beams dug
  • cables installed
  • foundation poured
  • framing, cornice, and roof decking done
  • mechanicals (AC, electric, and plumbing)
  • insulation and sheetrock installed
  • texturing complete
  • cabinets and trim installed
  • start bricking

I can’t believe how much has been accomplished in such a short period of time!  Thank goodness for good {hot} weather during Texas summers.  While much of our first home experience has been relatively easy, we did come across our first hiccup this past week… we were informed that our tile was on backorder and wouldn’t be available in time for our home to be completed.  :(  While this might not necessarily be a stressful situation for most people, I was SUPER stressed because they wanted Danny to go and pick out the new tile since I am in South Africa!  {What is wrong with these people?!?!  Danny doesn’t care what the tile in our home looks like!?!?}  So after trying everything I knew to do to try to get them to understand and hold off on having us select the new tile until I get back, I sadly lost that battle and ended up having to select new tile through photos from Danny with very descriptive comments on their textures {since I’ve got issues with the textures of some things}.  And to make matters even worse, it wasn’t just the floor tile that was on backorder… it was the shower pebbles too. :(  Ugh.  Hopefully we won’t have any more bumps along the way, especially while I’m still in South Africa.

Last but not least, I wanted to share a collection of pictures from June up until now.  Enjoy!

Can’t wait to see what it looks like next week!  I’m thinking that the house might almost be complete by the time I get back home!  Haha.  Have a great weekend and see you back soon!
