Project Organization: the home office

Life has been crazy busy around our house lately.  I feel like I’ve got 101 things going on right now, but it’s time to check back in and show off some of the things I’ve been working on!  :)  Last weekend, I posted about some of the inspirations for my home office.  {If you missed the post, you can check it out here.}  Today, it’s time to reveal how it all turned out!

As I mentioned before, everything started with the desk.  I got it from Target last summer to use in my Kindergarten classroom.  After deciding to take a break from teaching for a while, all of my teaching stuff came home to live in the garage {until now, as I am selling it all.}  I loved the little white desk so much, I couldn’t stand to part with it.  So, I found it a new home in our guest bedroom.  The room is now a shared space for the guest bed, my home office, and all of my crafting supplies.  The room originally just had the bed in it and the large Eiffel Tower picture {from IKEA} hanging on the wall.

I have made lots of changes to the room over the last few months.  Remember, that I started this projects back in January when I purchased the large bookshelf and a couple of smaller shelves from IKEA.  At the time, I wasn’t ready to purchase organization containers because I was unsure of what all would end up in the space.  So, I waited.  :)

After about a month, I decided that all of my crafting supplies, scrapbooking gear, and photography equipment would be kept in the guest bedroom’s closet.  So, I started to organize it all.  It is still a work in progress.  There are a couple of craft organizers I want to buy to help organize all of my scrapbooking supplies better, but unfortunately, I won’t be able to finance that part this go round.

Ready for the big reveal???  Imagine the room before as pretty much a blank canvas.  The room only contained a bed and the large Eiffel Tower print hanging on the wall.  The bed had a black, white, gray and red color scheme.  {I wish I had a picture to show you.}  Check out the transformation!

I’m still not in love with the bed yet… but it looks a lot better than it did when I started.  I think it needs a cool headboard {crafty wheels turning in my brain!} and maybe to lose the black comforter.  I have a thing for all white bedding, colorful accent pillows and a patterned coverlet at the foot of the bed {think Pottery Barn}.  Maybe there will be an update to this part in posts to come!  ;)

These are a couple of pillows I whipped up on my sewing machine this morning.  I bought the fabric yesterday while out and about.  The old red pillows we had are hiding inside of the two yellow pillows.  :) Again, I’m still unsure of the bed, but I think it’s the darkness of the black comforter that is what’s wrong here.

Here is my home office area!  And here is that little white desk that I love so much!  Isn’t it cute??  It came from Target, but I don’t think they sell it anymore.  The shelves above the desk all came from IKEA. The colorful cart to the right of the desk was something I also had in my classroom.  I don’t think it will stay, but it works great for extra storage for now.  The chair also came from IKEA, but it didn’t come in that beautiful blue.  I painted it Sunday afternoon in the garage and just LOVE how it turned out!

Much of the decor on the shelves came from our wedding decor {the mossy frames, the engraved wooden box, and the ampersand.}  The antique school bell was a gift from my mother-in-law one Christmas that used to be displayed in my classroom… I just LOVE it!  The storage boxes on the top shelf hold more office and crafting supplies.  I am still on the lookout for one more box like the one on the far left, but so far, I’ve have been to 3 different Targets and each is sold out.  :(

Here is another IKEA find!  It is the Dignitet wire hanging system.  The wire is super long, but can be easily cut to your desired size.  You buy the hanging clips separately.  I love hanging some of my favorite pictures up there and my to-do lists!  I also love how easily you could change them out without having to mess with frames.

This is the Expedit shelving unit from IKEA.  It was the first piece I bought for the room to go with the desk.  I wanted one that was bigger, but this wall with the desk {even if I got rid of the colorful cart} just couldn’t hold it.  But once I got this smaller one all set up, I just love it to pieces!  And even more so, I especially love the storage boxes and magazine file boxes that I found.  They are from Target and they fit perfectly.  I also love that they conceal all of my magazines, books, and scrapbooks.  :)

Here are a couple more decoration items that I wanted to tell you a little more about.  On the left is my new trash can!  Isn’t it just darling??    I wanted something small that didn’t necessarily look like a trash can.  I also wanted something that was lined so I wouldn’t have to use ugly plastic trash bags.  And since the majority of my trash for this room is paper, a fabric liner works perfectly.  Plus, I can throw it in the washer if it ever becomes dirty.  On the right is this cute little lantern I found at IKEA.  I loved it’s color so much and just couldn’t resist!  In fact, it was this very color that was the inspiration for the color of the chair I painted.  I actually pulled the top off of the lantern and took it to Home Depot and had them color match it for the paint.

On the wall opposite the bed is the closet.  It is pretty small and has the double sliding doors, so you can only access one side at a time. As I mentioned earlier, this part is still a work in progress because I want to purchase a piece of furniture that will better organize all of my scrapbook gear.  For now, it is all separated into different plastic containers as you can see in the picture on the left.  The right side of the closet has a lot of my photography equipment.  I decided to buy a sweater organizer {from Target} and the coordinating fabric drawers to help contain and organize this growing collection.  :)

In between the closet and the door to the room, there was a tiny sliver of wall.  I put a wicker laundry basket there for guests and hung a picture collage above it.

Here is a close up of the picture collage.  The frame is from Creative Memories {a scrapbooking company.}  It is one of my absolute favorites!  We actually have two of these in our home.  :)  It is magnetic and I love that you can add 12×12 paper to the background to coordinate with the room’s color scheme… easy to change if the room’s colors ever change.

If you haven’t noticed, I have a small obsession for photographs.  ;)  They are everywhere in this room! But I love how they tell our story… probably one of the main reasons why I love being a photographer so much {to capture others’ stories.}

Well, here’s one more project I can mark off the to-do list.  I am pleased with the end results, as there is so much that I just LOVE about this new space!  The storage bins and the painted chair are just a few of my favorite things.  The bed and closet need a little tweaking, but I’m sure with a little searching and patience I will find a look that fits them perfectly.

I’ve got one more organization project headed your way later this week.  Can’t wait to show it off!
