Spring Cleaning Project # 5: Deep Cleaning the Kitchen

It’s round 2 in our spring, deep cleaning project!  Today, we take on the kitchen.  In case you missed round 1, you can see it here.

I am absolutely head over heels in love with my new homemade cleaning products!  And the bathrooms still haven’t lost their shine one week later.

Here are the supplies I’ve gathered for today’s list of chores:

  • Homemade all-purpose cleaners
  • Baking soda
  • Natural sea sponge
  • Microfiber cleaning cloths
  • Rubber gloves
  • Bucket

Special Note- the recipes for making your own all purpose cleaners were shared in last week’s post: Spring Cleaning Project # 4: Deep Cleaning the Bathroom.  See the link above.

Say hello to my new kitchen cleaning supplies!

Alright, let’s get scrubbing!  Here is what I did, step by step:

  1. Prep sink faucets for cleaning by putting a paper towel soaked in vinegar around the base and let sit for one hour.
  2. Wipe down refrigerator with vinegar-based all purpose cleaner and microfiber cloth.  Clean inside of fridge as well.
  3. Wipe down microwave with vinegar-based all purpose cleaner and a microfiber cloth.  Clean inside of microwave with a vinegar and water steam bath.  {check out my post on cleaning tips to find out how}
  4. Clean stove top with vinegar-based all purpose cleaner and a microfiber cloth.
  5. Wipe down oven front with vinegar-based all purpose cleaner and a microfiber cloth.  Clean inside of oven with a vinegar-based all purpose cleaner and a sponge.
  6. Wipe down countertop appliances with a damp microfiber cloth… I used the same cloth used with the vinegar-based all purpose cleaner.
  7. Wipe down dishwasher front with vinegar-based all purpose cleaner and a microfiber cloth.  Clean inside of dishwasher by running an empty cycle with 1 cup of distilled white vinegar.
  8. Clean windows and window sill using vinegar-based all purpose cleaner and a microfiber cloth.
  9. Spot clean walls with a baking soda paste {just baking soda and warm water} and a sponge.
  10. Dust wall artwork and light fixtures with a dry microfiber cloth.
  11. Clean sink faucet by removing vinegar-soaked paper towel and wiping clean.
  12. Wipe down switch plates with damp microfiber cloth… I used the same cloth that I used to wipe the windows and mirror.
  13. Remove all items from countertop and clean counter using vinegar-based all purpose cleaner and a microfiber cloth.
  14. Scrub sink with vinegar-based all purpose cleaner and a sponge.
  15. Clean kitchen decor items with damp microfiber cloth.  Put items back on countertops after they have been cleaned.
  16. Wipe down cabinet fronts with Borax-based all purpose cleaner and a sponge.
  17. Empty out contents of drawers and cabinets.  Wipe inside of cabinets and drawers with Borax-based all purpose cleaner and a sponge.  Put items back in drawers and cabinets.
  18. Sharpen kitchen knives if necessary.
  19. Clean baseboards using Borax-based all purpose cleaner and a sponge.
  20. Pull refrigerator out.  Sweep and mop floors underneath it.  Put fridge back in place.
  21. Pull oven out.  Sweep and mop floors underneath it.  Put oven back in place.
  22. Sweep and mop kitchen floors.

Woo-hoo, I’m done!  The kitchen took me about 3 hours to complete.  Again, I am very pleased with the end results!  I love the simplicity of using natural, homemade cleaners.  Want to know what my favorite kitchen cleaning tip was??  The microwave steam bath!!  The stuck on food particles just wiped right out afterwards without any scrubbing… amazing!  Check out the before and after pics:

Is anyone out there trying the “green clean?”  What are your thoughts about it?  I would love to hear what you gals have to say!  I’m sharing another cleaning recipe this week… stay tuned!
