Spring Cleaning Project # 2: the closet

Howdy ya’ll!  I’m back with another spring cleaning project.  This week we’ll tackle the closet and see what skeletons we can clean out.  ;)  This is one of my favorite cleaning projects to do because it helps make space in the closet for new wardrobe items that come from spring shopping sprees!

I don’t know if you’re like me but I’m one of those who really has a hard time getting rid of clothes and shoes.  It doesn’t matter if I haven’t worn it in 5 years or if it’s now acquired a few extra holes {like some of my jeans}.  If it has some sort of sentimental value or it’s just one of my all-time favorites, I just can’t seem to throw it out.  :(  So this week, I invite you to be brave and work through your closet {and dressers} to clean out some of those hidden treasures that are in need of a new home.

Here are some of the criteria I go by when sorting through my clothes to decide which to keep and which to toss:

  1. Have I worn it in the past year??
  2. Does it still fit??
  3. Does it flatter my body??
  4. Does it look my age??
  5. Is it worn, stained, or have holes??

Some of the common mistakes people make when sorting through their clothes are: convincing themselves that they may wear it again some day, thinking that they will lose weight and fit into it again, or thinking they will go out and buy something to go with it so that they will wear it again.  We are all guilty of thinking one if not all of these at some point in our lives.  However, if it hasn’t happened yet, chances are, it probably won’t happen.  And when it comes to losing weight, one of the best rewards is getting to go out and buy some great new clothes!  :)  Don’t hold onto clothes you aren’t wearing regularly.  Be smart and send them on their way… someone else will hopefully get better use out of them.

Here is what I was able to purge after asking myself the above five questions:

This year, I had a big a-ha moment while cleaning out my closet.  I was finding a lot of clothes that still fit me, but that weren’t necessarily age appropriate anymore.  :(  As I am approaching 30 {2 more years people}, I’ve decided that it was finally time to get rid of all of the short shorts and baby tees that show off the midriff.  Although I haven’t actually worn them in years now, there is no use in holding onto them for sentimental reasons.  So into my pile went my favorite little pink shorts and my Abercrombie baby tee that says “My heart belongs to what’s his face.”  :(

After you’ve sorted through your clothes, bag up the items in good condition and take them to Goodwill or make a donation to Purple Heart.  Toss any items that are beyond repair… this includes shoes.  Now give yourself a big pat on the back… You did it!

Til next time,

{courtney}
